Teaching Philosophy

As an educator, I am responsible for providing students with a carefree environment in which they can learn and develop their full potential without a concern of making mistakes. I think learning should take place in such an environment so that students feel comfortable enough to express their musical ideas and share them with teachers and other students. This safe and forgiving environment allows students to learn from mistakes based on which they grow further, before they have to learn those lessons in the outside of school. It is a crucial objective of educators to prepare graduates to function successfully in careers when they leave the protected environment of school.

In the classroom, I will need to learn my students’ interest, characteristics, and musical talent early on. This will allow me to plan ahead on uniquely customizing my teaching style to individual students. In the area of collaborative piano, creating music with other instrumentalists or singers takes various steps of preparation and training. I believe one of the keys for the most successful music education in collaborative piano is flexibility because being collaborative is, as the word implies, the core principle of the collaborative piano. With this in mind, an effective education in collaborative piano naturally occurs by engaging each other in their learning.

My own experience in the past as a student, freelance collaborative pianist, church pianist, coach, and teacher will be a valuable material to properly nurture students who want to be a successful collaborative artist. I will provide various methods of how to harmoniously work together with other musicians, not by simply telling students what I want them to know, but by sharing my experience and simultaneously listening to their views. This way, I can learn just as much from my students as they can learn from me. Also, I want to ensure to show them as much respect as they show me by permitting a free flow of students’ ideas and interpretations. I plan to do this endeavor by allowing students to input in choosing the music they perform, as well as specific content they want to learn.

I really want my students to be well prepared before they become a citizen of music society. Music education is important, not only for the marketable skills it teaches such as creativity, discipline, flexibility, and the ability to cooperate with each other, but also because music simply makes life more enjoyable. We as an educator must allow students to find the right ways to access and express their creative potential for their own sake.

In summary, I believe the purpose of a music education is to empower students to artistically think and beautifully make their own music through proper learning and training. This requires patience, commitment, and diligence from both students and educators. My ultimate goal is to dedicate myself to providing the right education to my students and let them feel productive in this society in the future. It is my hope that my students will leave the classroom as better learners and better people.
